MEEKER I The Meeker High School volleyball team is winding down their regular season and preparing to jump into the post-season with momentum. This week is not only senior night, recognizing the players that will play their last game on their home court, the lady Cowboys are planning to “Pink the gym” both Thursday and Friday night. Wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, backing the understanding of the power of prevention, the power of knowledge, the Power of Pink. Meeker will host Grand Valley and Rangely this weekend with the Rangely game carrying the importance of league standings.
Last weekend the lady Cowboys played Paonia on Friday night for what looked to be the league championship game, both teams went into the game undefeated against league opponents. Meeker came out strong executing on offense and “putting the ball away quickly to eliminate their ability to scrap back into a play.” Atwood said. The lady Cowboys won the first set impressively 25-16. Going into the second match, the girls “Didn’t execute near as well”, said Atwood but they hung with the Paonia team falling in a close 22-25 set two. Meeker became tentative after their loss and the powerful Paonia offense found some rhythm taking the third and fourth set, ending the match, 18-25, and 15-25.
Coming off a huge league game, Meeker traveled to Soroco for their next match, and the first game showed a little fatigue, however the girls dug deep and took the momentum back to finish the match in three games.
With one weekend left before the post-season begins, Coach Atwood stressed the importance of keeping the team’s goal in mind saying, “As much as the loss was disappointing, we are keeping it in perspective.” Referring to the importance of this week’s matches and of course the post-season beginning. The team has showed they have the talent to compete with the top teams and the fun part of the season awaits, as do the goals and hopes of Meeker’s lady Cowboys. Good luck in the early phase of your journey.
