MHS volleyball opens at Glenwood Springs

MEEKER I The Lady Cowboy volleyball team will open the varsity season in Glenwood Springs this weekend.
“We play up in Glenwood, there are mostly 3-4 and 5A schools,” coach Christy Atwood said of the upcoming competition for her 2A varsity team. “We’ll use it as a measuring stick to see where we are competing.”
Meeker graduated five seniors last year, but Atwood is excited about the six out this year to replace them.
“We have a good group of seniors to step in,” Atwood said of Shae Barrow, Sage Chapin, Denee Chintala, Rebecca de Vergie, Laura Glass and Elissa McLaughlin, who will provide the senior leadership this season. “I’m excited about this season, because I think we found some hidden strengths in the offseason,”
Moffat County and Grand Valley were in Meeker last Saturday for a scrimmage and Atwood was pleased with how her team performed.
“We looked better than I anticipated,” Atwood said. “We don’t have a set six (starters) yet, so everyone was playing for position and all the girls played up to my expectations. It was exciting to see.”
Atwood believes Rangely will again be one of the top teams in the league and the Panthers will be in Meeker Tuesday for the Lady Cowboys’ first home match.
“They changed the league around this year, we play some twice and others once,” Atwood said. “I’m anxious to get through the Glenwood tournament to see how we compare.
“Rangely will be tough, it’s a good rivalry and they have a good group of seniors too,” Atwood said.
Roxy Chintala and Stacy LeBlanc will assist Atwood with the coaching duties again this season.
