MEEKER I Meeker volleyball coach Christy Atwood said, “It was a great way to start off our league play,” referring to the outstanding start to the regular season for the lady Cowboys, defeating Vail Christian at home Saturday. They not only won, they swept Vail in three games 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23.
“Vail Christian is historically tough.” Atwood said, very pleased with her team’s performance. She added, “We were able to control the ball very well and stay on the attack which helped us put the ball away when we needed to.” The team certainly proved they are capable of playing great volleyball, and look forward to yet another tough weekend ahead. Meeker will travel to Plateau Valley on Friday night and then to both Paonia and Hotchkiss Saturday finishing a three match weekend, with all counting for league standings.
With the first weekend of league play behind them, Coach Atwood saw things she was very excited about as well as areas that will need some improvement.
“Our serving wasn’t stellar, and that is usually a strong point so we look for that to be better.”
The team beat a solid league opponent despite serving that was not up to their expectations, they plan to remedy errors and accent their positives as they head on the road to play one of last year’s top teams in Paonia, as well as a team new to the league this year in Hotchkiss. The girls hope to build on a remarkable start, and continue to play great team ball behind their strong bunch of senior leaders.
