MEEKER I The Meeker volleyball team extended its winning streak with two convincing wins over league opponents. Meeker hosted the Hotchkiss Bulldogs on Friday and coach Christy Atwood said of their victory in three straight sets, “We let them have a few runs in the third set that we fought back from but the mistakes we were making were the mistakes of trying something new. Either specific shots when we were on attack, service locations, or a play we are trying to run offensively. It was a confidence booster when the girls are able to knock down a ball we have been working on in practice.”
Meeker beat Hotchkiss 25-16, 25-13, and 25-23. The lady Cowboys took their momentum on the road Saturday to Walden to face to traditionally competitive girls from North Park. This was the fourth league game for Meeker, and their win improved them to 4-0 in matches that count for district seeding.
Despite some serving errors, Meeker stayed on attack and held to their game plan, beating the Wildcats in three sets 25-14, 25-14 and 25-20 over a very scrappy team.
For the remainder of the season, the matches will count and Atwood looks forward to continuing to raise their level of play, as they play for league standings.
“As far as the league, it is pretty scattered with wins and losses,” Atwood said. “If we continue to stay the course and execute as we have been, I would like to say we would be in the top two. This league has always been a wait till the last day to see where we shake out.”
Meeker travels to Hotchkiss on Friday night and will play Plateau Valley on Saturday. The team looks to be having fun and playing great volleyball, improving with every week of practice and finding the right chemistry on the floor, it is a combination certainly worth the price of admission.
