MEEKER I Cowboy wrestling coach J.C. Watt traveled with six high school wrestlers to Gunnison for a team camp at Western State College. The Cowboys have a few more practices left before ending their summer program with a July 8 clinic featuring Meeker’s three-time all-American Joe LeBlanc. The Meeker Community Wrestling Club will host a barbecue June 26 to raise funds for the recently formed club which benefits all Meeker wrestlers.
“It was a good camp,” Watt said. “They had two technique sessions with Western State wrestlers and Tom Clum (former three-time Colorado state champ, whose only high school loss came in the finals of the state tournament his senior year) and everyone got between 15 and 18 matches.”
J.C. Henderson, Aaron Cochran, Anthony Watt, Willis Begaye, Justin Hardy and J.R. Crawford all wrestled.
“There were 34 teams there, including six from Arizona and two from Kansas,” Watt said.
The Cowboys teamed up with Moffat County’s seven wrestlers. Bulldog head coach Roman Gutierrez said he had wrestlers in weights where Meeker didn’t and said he was impressed with Meeker’s wrestlers.
“Meeker is going to have some tough kids next year,” Gutierrez said.
LeBlanc’s clinic be held in the elementary school gym.
All wrestlers, parents, family and supporters of Meeker wrestling are invited to the barbecue Sunday, starting at 1 p.m., at Town Park. Games will be played and a silent auction will be held. Tickets can be purchased from any high school wrestler and will also be available Sunday.
