MEEKER I The Cowboy wrestling team made a long trip to Buena Vista on Jan. 28 for a dual meet with the 2A Demons, and they returned home victorious.
Meeker will wrestle Cedaredge in a dual Friday at 6 p.m., then host eight other teams Saturday for a dual meet tournament, which will start at 9 a.m.
“It was a close dual against good competition,” Meeker head coach J.C. Watt said of the 37-32 win over the Buena Vista Demons.
Meeker won seven of 11 matches wrestled, including four by pin fall.
Jacob Pelloni (106), Sheridan Harvey (120), Casey Turner (152), T.J. Shelton (170) and Caleb Bradford (195) all pinned their opponents.
Meeker senior Devon Pontine (182) won by a major decision (12-3) and Hunter Garcia beat his opponent 5-3.
With one week left in the regular season, the Cowboys are currently ranked No. 3 in State 2A by On the Mat Rankings, and Meeker has several wrestlers ranked in the top four, including top ranked Shelton and Pontine. Turner is ranked second, Harvey and Rule are ranked third in their respective weights and Tyler Ilgen (285) is ranked No. 4.
The Cowboys will wrestle five duals on Saturday, against which teams is yet to be determined from a field including Grand Valley, Steamboat Springs, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Coal Ridge, Rangely and Soroco.
“Our team should do well,” coach Watt said. “It should be a good tune-up for the regional tournament.”
