MHS wrestlers win, to play host

MEEKER I The Cowboy wrestling team made a long trip to Buena Vista on Jan. 28 for a dual meet with the 2A Demons, and they returned home victorious.

Meeker will wrestle Cedaredge in a dual Friday at 6 p.m., then host eight other teams Saturday for a dual meet tournament, which will start at 9 a.m.
“It was a close dual against good competition,” Meeker head coach J.C. Watt said of the 37-32 win over the Buena Vista Demons.
Meeker won seven of 11 matches wrestled, including four by pin fall.
Jacob Pelloni (106), Sheridan Harvey (120), Casey Turner (152), T.J. Shelton (170) and Caleb Bradford (195) all pinned their opponents.
Meeker senior Devon Pontine (182) won by a major decision (12-3) and Hunter Garcia beat his opponent 5-3.
With one week left in the regular season, the Cowboys are currently ranked No. 3 in State 2A by On the Mat Rankings, and Meeker has several wrestlers ranked in the top four, including top ranked Shelton and Pontine. Turner is ranked second, Harvey and Rule are ranked third in their respective weights and Tyler Ilgen (285) is ranked No. 4.
The Cowboys will wrestle five duals on Saturday, against which teams is yet to be determined from a field including Grand Valley, Steamboat Springs, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Coal Ridge, Rangely and Soroco.
“Our team should do well,” coach Watt said. “It should be a good tune-up for the regional tournament.”

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
