Montrose couple’s death ruled homicide by coroner

The Montrose County coroner’s office ruled the deaths of a Montrose couple as homicide. The person of interest in the case was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a Montrose apartment.
Scott Clarke, 34, and Kama Sanburg, 49, died of gunshot wounds and were found in their home by Clarke’s 15-year-old son Monday, March 14.
The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office named Ryan Peterson, 19, as a person of interest and sought him for questioning after the bodies were found. Authorities received an anonymous tip last Wednesday that Peterson was in a Montrose apartment. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound that same day. Peterson was also wanted on four outstanding warrants and listed Clarke and Sanburg’s address as his residence on court documents.
Clarke is the son of Meeker postmaster Caryl Meitler.
“I don’t know what happened, and the sheriff’s office is not telling me anything, since the case is still open,” Meitler said in a phone conversation. Meitler has been in Montrose since last week and is expected to return to Meeker with her grandson this week.
Meitler confirmed Peterson lived with her son and his family.
“My son took him in two years ago and treated him like his own son,” Meitler said.
