Park Mountain, standing 18 miles south of Rangely at the end of Dragon Road, remained shrouded in clouds for a week in early December as an inversion covering the valleys of eastern Utah and western Colorado persisted. The National Weather Service projected that during the next week that an Arctic system would bring unseasonably cold temperatures and that it would “finally mix out the inversions over northwest Colorado.” It indeed did that as temperatures plummeted to a minus-29 degrees, staying below zero for several days.
