Museum, RBCHS invited to join event

MEEKER I “Good history is best told by more than one voice,” states the Museum of Western Colorado (MWC). In that spirit, the MWC staff invited history institutions from around the Western Slope to help tell the story of our heritage.
The invitation included the Rio Blanco County Historical Society (RBCHS) and White River Museum. Both groups share a common goal to develop heritage tourism in this region.
Every winter, the Museum of Western Colorado in its Museum of the West facilitates an exhibit series in cooperation with invited heritage groups. This year, the invitation was to present “A Community Treasure,” highlighting a prominent story the groups are sharing with their community and surrounding area.
RBCHS chose to tell the story of the historic Milk Creek Battle and how it has been commemorated at the Milk Creek Battlefield Park. The RBCHS is planning to build the exhibit later this month with the “story,” mounted photos and two artifacts to be viewed at the museum, 462 Ute Ave. in Grand Junction, from Feb. 14 to May 3.
At least 10 other cultural organizations from all over the Western Slope such as historical societies, museums and university history departments are also participating.
With a membership to the RBCHS, your 2014 membership card will provide free entry to this exhibit and the other participating organizations throughout the exhibition, including the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose and Pioneer Town in Cedaredge.
