RBC I The Meeker Mustangs are three games into their season now, and the improvement in such young, excited players was obvious as the third and fourth grade team had a nail-biting game against New Castle at Rifle High School Saturday. The Mustangs came out ready to play, matching the opening touchdown of their opponents, and going ahead with a successful conversion by Kelton Turner. He found a gap behind solid blocking by the offensive line and scored both touchdowns for the Mustangs Saturday. The defense forced three fumbles early in the game with Zager “Z-Dog” Brown providing some great tackles and Connor Blunt causing some early chaos for the quarterback. Lane Anderson ran for several yards in the game and an outstanding pass play from quarterback Braden Garcia to Liam Deming was a definite highlight of the game.
New Castle’s offense found a gap late in the game putting them ahead by a touchdown but the tenacious defense of the Mustangs got the ball back and the offense had one last chance to score with just over two minutes on the clock. They gained yardage on offense but fell short on a fourth down conversion with 34 seconds left to play, and New Castle kneeled out the clock. The Mustangs were excited about their finish and look forward to their next game, practicing hard for coaches, Obie Deming, Jeff Eskelson, Dave Cole and Stan Garcia. The kids are enthusiastically improving with every week of football.
