MEEKER — The Mustangs took the field on Meeker’s turf Sunday afternoon and the young Mustangs faced off with the Rifle Cubs.
The Cubs came to play as they rolled up the field and scored first, putting the Mustangs behind 8-0.
The young Mustang defense of Caleb Bradford, Cole Brown, Josh Cochran, Zack Dinwiddie, Luis Fierro, Garrett Frantz, Marcos Gonzales, Trapper Merrifield, Jesus Soto Jr. and Noah Mayerle to name a few, quickly made adjustments and held the Cubs from scoring again.
The young Mustang offense quickly moved up the field as Harvey zig-zagged into the Cub end zone. By halftime, the score was 8-6 and the Mustangs were determined to keep the Cubs out of their end zone.
Caleb Bradford sacked the quarterback and stopped their halfback from driving up the field, as Bruce Kelley and Cole Brown came twisting down on the Rifle offense.
With two minutes left in the game, quarterback Casey Turner handed off to Harvey for a 50-yard run into the Cubs’ den.
The Mustangs, with less than a minute left, kept Rifle from scoring again. In the last minute of the game, Chase Rule sacked the quarterback as the clock ran out and the young Mustangs sent the Cubs back home defeated 12-8.
The older Mustangs took on Parachute with great defensive plays by Tony Collins, Bradi Bland, Ruger Lewis, Robbie Jensen, Corey Padilla, Austin Purcell, Cade Rowlett, Jake Nielsen and Anthony Watt.
Parachute found a way to break through the Mustang defense and score.
The older Mustangs struggled this week on offense as the overpowering Parachute defensive line continued to penetrate and made it very hard to gain any yards.
Lopez with his speed, hard hitting and natural instinct of the game, with teammates Pontine, Collins, Nieslanik, Pelloni, Phelan and Shelton, repeatedly ran down the Parachute offense to keep them from scoring again.
