VFW Fourth of July activities
MEEKER | The Meeker VFW Post 5843 will be marching in this year’s Fourth of July parade and would like to invite all veterans to march with us. Additionally the Meeker VFW Post 5843 and the Ladies Auxiliary Post 5843 will have an awning set up and will have flags and poppies. Donations will go towards the Rio Blanco County War Memorial. A patriotic flag burning ceremony will be performed after the Range Call parade. We encourage everyone to come out and attend.
Elks Park grand re-opening Saturday
RANGELY | The grand re-opening of Elks Park will be held Saturday, July 7, starting at 10 a.m. Inflatable play structures will be open for the kids, followed by a grand-reopening ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Afternoon events include a rib cook-off at 2:30 p.m., with a salsa contest at 5 p.m. And rib tasting and judging at 6 p.m.
Cook named to Luther College dean list
MEEKER | Kevin Kraus, Luther College vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, has announced that Sydney Cook, Luther College senior of Meeker, Colo., was named to the 2012 spring semester dean’s list.
“Troubled Trails” book signing July 4
MEEKER | Robert Silbernagel, the editorial page editor of The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction and the author of “Troubled Trails: The Meeker Affair and the Expulsion of Utes from Colorado,” will be at Wendll’s Wondrous Things on July 4. He spent four years researching and writing the book, including traveling extensive portions of the trails the Utes used following the battle at Milk Creek and the killings at the White River Indian Agency on September 29, 1879.
Smokin’ BBQ Showdown cancelled
MEEKER | Due to the fire ban and extreme fire danger, the Smokin’ BBQ Showdown scheduled for this week will be postponed until later in the year.
CPW to discuss Lake Avery water release
MEEKER | Colorado Parks and Wildlife is inviting the public to a roundtable discussion regarding the planned release of water from Lake Avery into the White River. The release is an attempt to alleviate drought-like conditions currently threatening the world-class fishing on the White River.
The meeting will be held at the Mountain Valley Bank in Meeker, Monday, July 9 at 7 p.m.
