Last day of Meeker Book Fair
MEEKER | The Meeker Elementary School at 201 Ute Road would like to invite the community to our Scholastic All-Star Book Fair as it continues today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The book fair will be held in the library. Grandparents are encouraged to bring their grandchildren to the book fair. All grandparents that bring a grandchild will have their name entered in a drawing for a gift from the book fair. Everyone is invited.

RBC Fair Board meeting today in Rangely
RANGELY | RBC Fair Board meeting is Thursday, Oct. 25, 6 p.m. at Western Annex in Rangely.

Mayor’s reception for the Capitol Tree
MEEKER | Plan on being in downtown Meeker at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2 to witness the grand entry of the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree. Following the grand entry, there will be a mayor’s reception at the Meeker Café from 5-7 p.m. During this time the Meeker Elementary School fifth grade students will sing patriotic songs, the tree banner, which will be attached to the tree as it travels across the United States on its way to Washington D.C., will be available for signing and Santa Claus will be celebrating with us. Capitol Christmas Tree parade of lights
MEEKER | The Meeker Chamber of Commerce is currently taking vendor applications for the street fair, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, 2-7 p.m., in downtown Meeker. The street fair is open to all businesses, not-for-profit organizations and groups needing a fundraising opportunity. The Meeker Chamber is also accepting entry forms for the Parade of Lights, scheduled for the evening of Nov. 3. For more information, or to pick-up an entry form, visit www.MeekerChamber.com, call 970-878-5510, or stop by 710 Market St. Plan on participating in the street fair and/or parade of lights to help celebrate Colorado’s “gift to the nation!”

Pennies Plus project ends Nov. 15
MEEKER | The Pennies Plus project ends Nov. 15, so until then … fill em’ up! Thank you for dropping those pennies … plus nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars into the Historical Society labeled coffee cans around town for all these months!!

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line.  The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.  See last week’s paper for a list of ways to help or contact the County Weed & Pest District at 970-878-9670 or the Conservation District office at 970-878-9838 with any questions.   • The winning teams and individuals for the 18th annual White River Community Association Buy-Fly Fishing Tournament are as follows. Individual top weight catch was Dave Metrovich and longest fish was Kevin Massey. First place team won by Rio Blanco Abstract: Erik Eckman, Adam Parrett, Dave Metrovich and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Second place team was Drake Consulting: Travis Kaiser, John Douglas, Tony Bartolomucci and Bob Brandeberry. Third place team Mr. Rogers and the Hood (accepted by Doug Rogers) Gary Rogers, Mark Beauchamp, Kyle Schutte and Rick Gunter. The white fish have been frozen and will be served at the annual White River Community Association fish fry fundraiser in June.
