Obituary: David Hilary Smith Jr.

David Hilary Smith Jr.
David Hilary Smith Jr.
David Hilary Smith Jr. was born in the Meeker family ranch home on April 20, 1931, to David Hilary Smith Sr. and Jessie Ray (Cunningham) Smith.

After nearly 84 busy and fulfilling years and some debilitating health problems, he passed away Tuesday April 7, 2015, at Pioneers Hospital.
Twelve years of early schooling were here in Meeker and, at his graduation in 1949, he was class valedictorian. He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder for one year before he was needed at home to work on the ranch because of his father’s health.
In 1951, he married Sue Ann Elliott, and they began their journey of 63 years together. Five children blessed their lives: David W., Brent, Matt, Lori and Brian. Times were busy with ranch work and a variety of church, school, 4-H, FFA and athletic events.
David also began many other interesting activities. He was an active stock grower, a school board member, a county commissioner and was on the church vestry. He served several state and local water boards and worked on local ditch projects. He was also an avid and opinionated Bronco fan. All of which brought him consternation, enjoyment and expertise.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; an infant daughter, Susan Marie; an infant granddaughter, Sarah Lynn; and his sister, Patricia.
Survivors include: his wife, Sue Ann; his children, David W. (Laura), Brent (Toby), Matt (Judy), Lori (Scott), and Brian (Jeanette); grandchildren: Dax, Tessa, Andrea, Brittiany, Landon, Jerod, Nick, Madeline, Hayley, Brittany and Meghan; great-grandchildren: Rye, Charlie, Wynn, Aspen, Avery, Blake and Copen; his brother, Rodney (Phyllis) of Anchorage, Alaska; cousin Lucy Jane Howey of Meeker; and other local and continental relatives.
Family, friends and “cohorts” gathered in Richard’s Hall after the cemetery services to share in David’s celebration of life with stories about his contribution to their lives.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James Episcopal Church of Meeker in care of Grant Mortuary.
David’s family received compassionate treatment from the ambulance crew and the hospital staff here in Meeker.
We have received so many cards, letters, floral tributes, food and visits from his Meeker friends. We are so grateful for your support and care. Thank you from all of us, and God bless.
Sue Ann, Davey, Laura and the girls, Brent and family, Matt and family; Lori and family; and Brian and family.

  1. I had the pleasure of working with David at RBC years ago. I have always had the utmost respect for his dedication, tenacity, compassion and wonderful sense of humor. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, amazing, family, and many friends. He truly made a difference.

  2. David seems to have been a great guy and I send my condolences. I have been researching my family tree and believe that he may be a (distant) cousin. If any of his family would like to share information, do email me at [email protected] in the UK.

Come say hi!
