Hortense Dixon
Hortense M. Dixon went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 25, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.
Hortense was born Feb. 10, 1926, to O.B. and Myrtle Hurt in Barnsdall, Okla. She married U.F. (Mutt) Dixon in Russell, Kan., on May 18, 1944. They settled in Rangely, Colo., in 1946. They raised four children.
Hortense worked at the Rangely District Hospital for 20-plus years. She was a member of Living Water Baptist Church in Fruita, Colo., where she enjoyed serving Power Lunch to Fruita Monument High School students. She was also a member of the 80-plus Women’s Club, where they enjoyed singing, crafts and fellowship. She was always very active in her church.
After Mutt’s retirement from Chevron Oil Co. in 1982, they moved to Dinosaur, Colo., and lived there for a short time, then moved to Vernal, Utah. After Mutt’s death in 1998, Hortense moved to Barnsdall, Okla., to be near her siblings until returning to Colorado and Fruita to be near her children.
Hortense loved fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with family. She always enjoyed gardening, sharing her vegetables and flowers with anyone who wanted them. She spent all of her spare time gardening right up to the very end.
Hortense was preceded in death by: Mutt, her husband of 52 years; her parents; multiple siblings; and two granddaughters.
She is survived by her children: Debbie (Butch) Norris, Fairl (Tonya) Dixon, LeeAnn (Terry) Eaton and Roy (Mary Lou) Dixon; two sisters, Mildred McKinney and Vona Anthony; one brother, Joe Hurt; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Living Water Baptist Church in Fruita. The viewing was held at 10 a.m. and funeral services followed at 11 a.m. with graveside services at Rangely Memorial Cemetery immediately following services.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Living Water Baptist Church, 1822 J ½ Road, Fruita, Colo.
