Janet Dole
Janet S. Dole
Dec. 15, 1955 ~ Jan. 4, 2019
Joseph and Doris Prockup celebrated the arrival of their second baby girl, Janet Sue, just 10 days before Christmas, 1955, at Pioneers Hospital in Meeker. That sweet baby girl bravely lost her battle with cancer Jan. 4, 2019, at the age of 63.
Some of Janet’s fondest childhood memories were on the Tagert Ranch up the Buford- Newcastle Road, as well as with her dear friend, Vicky Caldwell, on their ranch west of Meeker. Janet proved to be exceptional with horses and was crowned Range Call Queen in 1973, the year prior to graduating from Meeker High School. Meeker’s Ellis Johnson inspired Janet to pursue a career in law enforcement. She earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Mesa State College following high school.
Janet married Tim Dole in 1976, welcoming the birth of their daughter, Suzan Janelle, in the spring of 1978. Tim and Janet worked side by side on the Marvine Ranch for 20 years. She loved horseback rides, cross country skiing, picnics, toll painting, sewing and gardening in her spare time. Janet moved to Steamboat Springs in 1995 where she put her criminal justice degree to work, becoming a dispatcher for Routt County Sheriff’s Department, then later for Montrose County. Janet returned to Mesa State to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration, graduating in 2000.
Janet utilized her new degree in a number of different trades, working for Halliburton and City Market, but mostly enjoyed her time working at the toy store in downtown Grand Junction. She couldn’t wait for her grandchildren to visit and see all the fun toys that grandma got to play with! While residing in Mesa County, Janet made many dear friends and filled her free time with square dancing, camping, hiking, Jeep rides and exploring the high deserts with her best friend, Harley Barfoot.
Janet was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Through countless hours of research, she dedicated herself to a natural lifestyle and will be remembered for her phenomenal perseverance through her battle, as well as her willingness to share her knowledge with others.
Janet is preceded in death by her sister Donna (Prockup) Flynn; parents Joseph and Doris (Tagert) Prockup; grandparents Steve and Mary Prockup and Ralph and Helen (Conlon) Tagert. She is survived by her daughter Suzan (Dole) Pelloni (Nathan), grandchildren Holt and Jenna Pelloni, along with many loving distant relatives and friends.
In honor of Janet’s love for the outdoors, a celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2019 in Meeker. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the White River Snowmobile Club to groom the Marvine cross country skiing track, a place she loved.
