Obituary: Kay Burgin Sullivan

In the early morning of Friday, May 8, 2009, under a brilliantly moonlit, clear, Colorado mountain sky, our beloved Mom and cherished friend Kay Burgin Sullivan was tenderly welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord and Creator and those of her loving friends & family gone before her.
Kay Burgin was born July 26, 1939, in El Paso, Texas. She married Rogers Huck Meredith, the son of Robert and Alice Meredith of Austin and gave birth to three sons, Rogers, Richard and Randall. Years later, while working for the city of Austin, she became close friends with Sue and Jim Sullivan of Beaver Falls, Pa. She married their oldest son, Patrick, and gave birth to their lovely daughter Michelle. She lived most of her life in Austin, where she and my dad, Patrick, raised their family of four children with the irreplaceable strength and support of their family’s most-treasured guardian, mentor and friend, Veoria Lewis Holloway, “Wo-wo.” Kay continued her professional career managing the data processing department of the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory and later worked for the state of Texas in Austin. Everywhere she worked, Kay found cherished and lasting friends whom she loved as deeply and perfectly as her own family. My mom’s friends were endless. Through the end of her days on earth, she constantly made more and more friends whom she loved and who loved her. Over her lifetime Kay also resided in Llano, Buda, and Bertram before moving to Meeker, where her oldest son, Reverend Rogers Meredith and his wife Marlene reside.
Along with her dear, dear friends and other relatives, Kay is followed in this life by her four grandchildren, Angela R. Ozburn (Mike), James Patrick Parks, Brittney Nichole Blake and Leroy Hunter Blake, who all knew her as their “Tay Tay.” She is lovingly remembered and desperately missed by her four children, Michelle Ann Blake (Robert), Randall Patrick Meredith (Kathy), Reverend Rogers Huck Meredith (Marlene) and Richard Allen Meredith-Sullivan (Troy). Kay’s love for her friends and family is endless and unconditional and will brighten and strengthen us throughout our lives and in each of our darkest times of need.
Kay inspired those she knew with her peaceful strength, infectious laughter, amazing intelligence, irrepressible charity, and her infinite capacity for love, forgiveness and understanding. Apologies or regrets expressed to Kay were never held bound for even an instant and were always met with immediate and total forgiveness and the easiest grace imaginable. My mom’s forgiveness always far preceded and far out-measured any apology or hurt and she would want everyone to know and remember this; now that we will have to wait just a little while to see her again. We miss you so, so much, mom. Our hearts are just breaking without you and being able to come see your beautiful face or feel your loving touch and without being able to pick up the phone and hear your precious, comforting voice.
My mom was a remarkable woman, exquisitely beautiful in body and soul. She showered her love upon everyone she knew through her sparkling hazel eyes, the radiant quality of her voice, her brilliant smile, exuberant laughter and the warmth and tenderness of her touch. Heaven is now a far brighter and more promising place for all of us with Kay counted among its eternal stars.
Services celebrating Kay’s life will begin Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Dayspring Fellowship Chapel, 5500 Avenue G, Austin, Texas. Internment will follow at approximately 4 p.m. at the city of Llano Historical Cemetery, 1400 Hickory Street, Llano, Texas. A Daughter of the Republic of Texas, Kay will be laid to rest among the majestic live oaks beside her ancestors who have made the Texas hill country their home for generations.
