Obituary: Lillie Onteen (McGruder) Ross

Lillie Ross
Lillie Ross
Lillie Onteen (McGruder) Ross was born Aug. 9, 1930; she passed away on Dec. 4, 2013, at St Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, James Frazee, and her beloved husband, Jesse James Ross. They were married in Grand Junction, Colo., on July 6, 1948. Lil was the mother of two children: Jesse Leon (Ruby) Ross from Craig, Colo., and Elaine K. (Wesley) Frazee from Rifle, Colo.
Lillie was living in Rifle with her one surviving sister, Audrey Squires, and has one surviving brother in Meeker, Colo., in Elmer McGruder.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Earl McGruder, Carl McGruder Sr., Wren McGruder (surviving spouse Judy McGruder), Perry McGruder; and sisters, Stella Blumhagen and Carrie Bina (surviving spouse Ted Bina). There is a big heartache in the family of eight grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
Lil and Jess’s home in Meeker was the go-to place for a cup of coffee and a chat. The coffee pot was always on and any and all were always welcome. Many hours were spent with quality family time playing cards into the wee hours of the morning.
Lil had a generous spirit and is known for her jelly making and crocheting. She gave more than 200 afghans away to family and friends. Her love was bowling, and she bowled in leagues for years at Ted and Carrie Bina’s White River Bowl. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and worked many hours at the bowling alley. That was her way.
If there was a need, she was there and she never complained, no matter what the job or the work involved. She was raised in an era of waste-not, want-not and was an avid recycler.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, in the Meeker LDS Ward Chapel. Viewing for family and friends was one hour prior to the services at the church.
Burial was in Highlands Cemetery in Meeker. Services have been entrusted to the care of Blackburn Meeker Mortuary.
