Walter “Fuzz” William Cook was born March 25, 1924, in Yuma, Colo., and passed away on May 11, 2011, surrounded by his family, in Meeker, Colo. Fuzz was the third child of 13 born to Robert James and Daisy Margaret Cook. Fuzz spent his childhood in Yuma and later made his home in Meeker in 1944. Fuzz married Buena Mae Owens in 1944. They had one son, Robert Wayne. Buena passed away in 1946. Fuzz married Roberta Jean Ridgeway on March 25, 1951. Fuzz and Roberta had two daughters to this union, Betty Jo and Judy Ann. Fuzz was in the United States Marine Corp from June 1944, until April 1946. Fuzz then spent his years as a government trapper. Later he became the superintendent at Rio Blanco County Road and Bridge. He retired after 35 years of service with the county. Fuzz always had a strong compassion for people from which he made everyone feel welcome. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, watching elk, coin collecting, arrowhead hunting and auctioning. Fuzz is survived by his wife of 60 years, Roberta Jean; children Robert (Sharon) Cook of Ninilchick, Alaska; Betty Jo (Terry) Oliver of Rozet, Wyo.; Judy (Thad Hauck) Davis of Meeker, Colo.; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy O’Brien, Sal Ridings, Peg (Pat) Burke and MaryAnn (Bud Duffy) Copeland. Three brothers, Sam Cook, Tom Cook, and Jim (Patty) Cook. Fuzz was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Buena, brothers Roy Cook and Charlie Cook, and sisters Carol Mae Cook, Sue Sutton and Lois Downey, and great-granddaughter Avy Oliver. Funeral services were performed at Highland Cemetery on May 16, 2011, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Walter Cook Memorial Fund at First National Bank of the Rockies.
