MEEKER — Many Colorado wrestling fans were treated to the opportunity of watching Henry Cejudo win two state titles a few years ago in the Pepsi Center. Since then, the 21-year-old has won an Olympic gold medal and will speak in Meeker Nov. 28.
“This is a great opportunity for our wrestlers and the community itself to learn and listen to what hard work and dedication can do for reaching your goals,” Meeker’s new wrestling coach Joe Gutierrez said. “He’s living the dream.”
Gutierrez was excited that Cejudo, who won the 2008 Bejing Olympics at 55 kilograms (121 pounds) last summer and has been touring the country, will make a stop in Meeker.
“It was neat how everything came together,” Gutierrez said. “I made a couple of new friends hunting and they helped bring an Olympic champion to Meeker.”
Details have not been finalized but Gutierrez said Cejudo would give wrestling demonstrations to younger kids and then high school kids. The wrestling demonstrations will be free to all Meeker wrestlers and a nominal fee will be charged to wrestlers from other towns. A dinner catered by Stage Stop is also being planned, during which Cejudo will give a motivational speech.
Fliers with details will be distributed, or for more information contact Gutierrez at 878-5463 or high school activities director Coley Turner at 878-9070.
