Opportunity for novice youth/women hunters

RBC | If you are between the ages of 12 and 17 and have never hunted, or a woman who wants to learn how to hunt turkey at your own pace but don’t have someone to show you how, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has the opportunity of a lifetime. If you are a true novice, apply now for a chance to participate in a mentored turkey hunt in some of the best hunting areas in northwest Colorado.

As part of CPW’s Hunter Outreach Program, the three-day excursions focus on teaching the basics of safe and ethical turkey hunting. After time spent with experts in the field, students will have the knowledge to hunt on their own, enjoying some of the best outdoor recreation in the world for the rest of their lives.

“There are quite a few inexperienced women and youth that want to learn and participate in one of Colorado’s most treasured traditions but they don’t have someone at home that can show them how,” said Kathleen Tadvick, CPW’s regional education coordinator. “That’s where we come in. For a variety of reasons the future of hunting is uncertain and that is a significant concern for the conservation of our wildlife. We as an agency believe strongly in providing the education and skills to novices so that an important tradition is passed from generation to generation.”

Youth participants should apply for only one of two hunts they can attend:

The youth turkey hunt takes place April 14-15 and he application packet should include:

– The youth’s name, address and Hunter Education card number

– A parent or guardian’s contact information, including an email address and phone number

– An essay of 500 words or less, handwritten by the youth and in their own words, about why he or she should be selected over other youth for this special experience. The applicant’s lack of experience, reasons that have kept them from participating in a hunt and the desire to learn are suggested topics for the required essay.

– By March 30, applicants must mail, email (or hand-deliver their entry to CPW’s Meeker office) to: DWM Bailey Franklin, P.O. Box 1181, Meeker, Colo., 81641; bailey.franklin@state.co.us.
