Out-of-town golfers take honors at Cedar Ridges

RANGELY I Fourteen teams entered the competitive annual two-man best ball tournament at Cedar Ridges Golf Course in Rangely last weekend, including teams from Rangely, Rifle, Fruita and Vernal, Utah. Three playoffs were needed to decide the final results.
Eighteen holes were played each day of the two-day event and it was Stratton Schulz and Braden Bennett of Vernal who won the first flight with a gross score of 133, six shots ahead of Dean Gibbs and Mike Wilson, also of Vernal.
A playoff was needed to determine the best net score in the first flight and Rangely’s Robby Elam and Casey Ducey were able to beat Blake Murray and Kendall Goodwin of Vernal. Both teams finished with a net score of 128.
A playoff was also needed to determine the winner in the second flight after former Rangely golf pro Dennis Rohn and Bret Tonozzi of Fruita tied at 144 with Mike Rowley and Nolan Massey of Vernal, with Rohn and Tonozzi winning the playoff.
Rangely’s Ryan Kennedy and Jason Cox finished with the best net score (116) in the second flight and Rangely’s Bryan Mackay and Ryan Elam were second with a net score of 129.
The annual Couples Classic will be played this weekend Aug. 4 and 5 at Cedar Ridges.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
