MEEKER I The 8th Annual Scrub Shirt Classic Race on Saturday hosted almost 125 participants.
“We are thrilled to see so many people participate in the 5K walk, run or stroll event,” said Curtis Cooper, the event coordinator and Pioneers Medical Center IT manager. “We want everyone to have fun and to know that no matter what the fitness level, getting out and moving is a healthy choice.
Tevin Pelloni ran the race for the best time of 24 minutes, 16 seconds. He led his sixth-grade teammates in the fifth grade vs. sixth grade challenge.
For an interesting twist to the event, the Meeker Elementary School fifth graders and the Barone Middle Shool sixth graders challenged each other to see who could get the most students to participate in the race, and complete the 3.2-mile race course.
“The kids were amazing! Thirty-eight fifth and sixth graders completed the course,” said Margie Joy, Pioneers Medical Center director of community relations. “The fifth graders won by having more than 50 percent of the class participate for a total of 23 students. They will receive a taco bar lunch and new physical education equipment for their school.”
The results in the three age categories were: (12 and under) Tevin Pelloni took first, Nick Massey and Tasos Halandras; (women) Kris Casey, Kendra Ward and third was Denise Schroeder-Jones; (men) Mike Weinbrecht, followed by Matt Ward and third was Jeff Crow.
All proceeds from the race support the Marvine Ranch Cancer Screening Fund. This fund is designed to assist uninsured and low-income area residents in receiving mammogram screenings. For more information about the program please call Rio Blanco County Nursing.
Pioneers Medical Center would like to thank all race participates as their involvement made the race a success. A thanks also goes to the Meeker Recreation Center and its staff for assistance, and the center was also generous to share its electronic race system, which streamlined the start and finish.
