RANGELY I The Rangely High School boys’ basketball team lost a home game against Hotchkiss then beat Caprock Academy on the road the next day.
The Panthers will host Little Snake River from Baggs, Wyo., on Friday, then travel to Collbran to play the Plateau Valley Cowboys on Saturday.
“We were within striking distance in the third quarter against Hotchkiss, but we didn’t execute down the stretch,” head coach Jeremy Cantrell said of the 51-34 league loss.
Senior Mitchell Webber led the Panthers with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and classmate Colt Allred scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Kelton Elam scored five, Patrick Scoggins had four, Freddie Ruiz had two and Layne Mecham made a free throw against the Bulldogs.
Against Caprock Academy, the Panthers opened up with a 15-10 lead after the first quarter, and the team maintained the spread at halftime, when both teams scored seven points in the second quarter.
The Panthers outscored Caprock 12-11 in the third quarter and put the game away in the fourth.
“We had every reason to panic when they cut our lead to one in the third, but I was pleased with our composure,” coach Cantrell said. “We ran our offense well and our seniors stepped up with big plays.”
Webber led the team again with 13 points and five rebounds while Allred added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Scoggins finished in double figures with 11, Troy Allred had eight and Elam finished with six.
Rangely will host the Little Snake River Rattlers on Friday, then travel to Collbran to take on the Cowboys Saturday.
