RANGELY I The Rangely High School cross-county team competed at the Basalt Longhorn Cross Country Invitation this past weekend along with 10 other schools from the Western Slope, and the harriers continue to show improvement.
The meet was run at Crown Mountain Park on a relatively flat course, but it was made challenging by the narrow paths and sharp corners. All of the Rangely runners runners had strong performances and they continued to improve.
The high schoolers where joined by junior high runners Ben Nielsen and Chloe Filfred at the invitational and they ran a 3,000-meter course against runners from Olathe, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and mix of other schools.
Filfred charged through the course in a time of 15:51 and finished in eighth place while Nielsen finished in 16th with a time 16:00.
Nielsen’s older sister, Savannah, led the way for the Lady Panthers with a 31st-place finish on the 5 kilometer course. Her time of 24:50 was more than four minutes faster than her time from last year, and she continues to improve weekly.
Joining her on the course, Rebecca Gillard improved her time from last year by more than four minutes as well and finished in a time of 27:54 for 56th place.
Patrick Scoggins led the way for the boys’ team, finishing eighth with a time of 18:00. Mitchell Webber clocked a strong time of 20:21 on the narrow course and finished 38th.
Zack Glasgow has established himself as the No. 3 runner on the team and had a strong race by finishing 58th overall with a time of 21:37.00.
Brennan Noyes, Daniel Connor and James Scoggins kept fairly close together throughout the race and finished in 62nd, 63rd and 69th, respectively. Noyes has a time of 22:08, Connor had a time of 22:17 and Scoggins crossed the line at 22:58.
The team continues to improve and looks forward to the challenges presented in Gunnison at this weekend’s race.
