Panthers run, jump, throw

RANGELY I The Rangely Panthers track and field team traveled to Grand Junction’s Stocker Stadium on Saturday to run, jump and throw in the Mickey Dunn Invitational.
“This was the first meet of the year we had a whole team, as the week before was spring break and our girls had just finished up their basketball season at regionals in Denver,” coach Cody Brunton said. “Though some of our athletes only had one real week of practice and the weather was less than desirable, there were quite a few highlights.”
One of the highlights, according to Brunton, was senior Holly Lepro placing third in the shot put with a put of 36 feet and a fourth place finish in the discus with a throw of 107 feet.
Lepro’s classmate Colton Coombs ran the 100-meter dash in 12.21 seconds, finishing 19th in a field of 60 sprinters. Brunton said Mitchell Webber ran several strong races, taking almost two seconds off his 300 meter hurdles, earning a 12th place finish with a time of 47.93 seconds.
Brunton said junior Andrew Morton “had one of his strongest performances of his track and field career.”
Morton finished second in the long jump, jumping 20-7 1/4, and cleared 5-10 in the high jump for another second place finish. He placed fourth in the triple jump, with a hop, skip and jump of 39-1 3/4, helping his team finish in 12th place.
“The rest of the team had a very strong meet as well, and we are looking forward to this weekend’s meet at Cedaredge and the rest of the season to come,” Brunton said.
