Panthers starting to hit stride

RANGELY | Rangely senior Aimee Hogan ran the 100-meter in 14.34, the 200-meter in 29.52 and the 400-meter in 1:04.33, all personal best times, at the Frank Woodburn Invitational Track Meet at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.[/caption]RANGELY I After a “bit of a slow start” due to post-season basketball play and spring break, Rangely track coach Cody Brunton was impressed with his team’s performance and improvements Saturday in Grand Junction at the Frank Woodburn Invitational meet in Stocker Stadium.
“I think our athletes’ bodies are finally past the super sore stage that comes with the start of any sports season, and they are now really getting into track shape and it shows,” Brunton said. “Almost every athlete on the team earned a personal best last weekend, which shows awesome progress, and some of the kids that didn’t drop time or increase distances still had awesome places in their events, which is obviously what we want to see.”
Panther seniors Andrew Morton and Connor Phelan scored points for the Panthers, to place them 10th as a team in a field of 18 mostly larger schools. Morton placed third in the 110-meter high hurdles, running and hurdling the distance in 16.16 seconds and he cleared 6 feet in the high jump, which also earned the returning state qualifier a third-place finish.
Phelan scored team points with a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash and he placed 11th in the 100- and 400-meter dashes.
Brunton said Zach Glasgow and Jesse Odom had personal bests in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and Odom also ran a personal best in the 400. James Scoggins and Troy Allred had personal bests in the 800 while Daniel Connor and Braxton Bishop recorded their best times in the 1600-meter run.
Ethan Allred and Marshall Way jumped to personal bests in the long and triple jumps, respectively, and Connor also had a personal best in the discus.
Senior Aimee Hogan recorded her best times in the meet’s speed races, the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes. Hogan ran the 100 in 14.34, the 200 in 29.52 and the 400 in 1:04.33.
Freshman Savanah Nielsen recorded her best times in the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs, and classmate Antionnette Doris had a personal best in the long jump.
The Panthers will compete at Coal Ridge on Friday.
