RANGELY I For the second week in a row, the Rangely High School football team jumped out to a quick and commanding start against its opponent, putting the game away in the first quarter.
The Panthers pounded the Miami-Yoder Buffalos from Rush, 54-6, scoring 34 points in the first quarter.
“The offensive line (Ryan Wilczek, Lane Mecham and Freddie Ruiz) has just been tremendous,” head coach Paul Fortunato said, crediting them for his team’s quick starts.
It was the offensive line, opening holes for five Panthers to rush for more than 300 yards and all five of them scored at least one rushing touchdown.
The Panthers were led by senior running back Lucas Heinle, who carried the ball 10 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns. Jimmie Sherman ran for 34 yards and scored a touchdown, Ethan Allred rushed for 20 yards and scored, Jesse Odem ran for 27 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Kaulan Brady rushed for 82 yards and also scored a touchdown.
“Kaulan had a great game,” Fortunato said.
Brady also completed five of six passes for 63 yards, including four to senior Cameron Enterline and one to Colt Allred for 11 yards.
“I think the guys are gaining some confidence and are learning, but they still have a long way to go,” Fortunato said.
Rangely’s defense sacked the quarterback three times in the game. Ethan Allred, Chance Sheppard and Freddie Ruiz all tackled the Buffalo quarterback behind the line of scrimmage once.
Goddard led the team with five tackles, Colt Allred and Sherman were each in on four and Odem recorded three.
Fortunato also mentioned Ryan Wilczek kicking four of five extra points in the game and just missing on a 30-yard field goal attempt.
The Panthers will host the defending league champion West Grand Mustangs on Yeager Field on Friday, with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
“This will be a huge test for us,” Fortunato said of the homecoming matchup.
Rangely’s JV team defeated the Plateau Valley Cowboys 40-18 on Monday.
