RANGELY I Rio Blanco County fielded two teams for the Rio Blanco American Legion’s fourth annual Rangely Invitational tournament and one of the teams made the final four.
“Both teams were up and down,” coach Paul Fortunato said of the two teams, one consisting of all Rangely players and one with Rangely and Meeker players. “We would show signs of life and then fall back off.”
Teams from Coal Ridge, Palisade, Price and Moab, Utah and the two Rio Blanco teams, played three games each using the Rangely High School and CNCC Spartan fields, July 9, before seeding the top four teams for a mini-tournament played July 10.
The all-Rangely team defeated Moab and Coal Ridge but lost to Price in pool play, to finish as the No. 3 seed. The mixed-RBC team also beat Moab but lost to Palisade and Coal Ridge.
Coal Ridge defeated Rangely in the consolation championship game and Palisade won the tournament by beating Price in the championship game.
“Nothing against the competition, it was good,” Fortunato said. “It was just a bad weekend for us. We are just better than both teams ended up.”
The RBC American Legion team will play Palisade next week.
