MEEKER I Barone Middle School eighth-grader Tevin Pelloni finished the regular season of the middle school wrestling season undefeated and he will wrestle in the state-qualifying middle school regional tournament in Grand Junction this weekend.
The young Cowboys spent the first day of their spring break in Rangely, wrestling in the Northwestern Colorado Championships, and the team finished third behind champion Craig and runner-up Gypsum.
“The kids did an amazing job,” said Todd Morris, who, along with Chris Selle and J.C. Watt, coached the team this year. “It was a wonderful year for Meeker wrestling.”
Barone Middle School heavyweight Ridge Williams also had a successful season, winning all his tournaments, including Saturday in Rangely, and he will enter the regional tournament with a 15-1 record.
The young Cowboys had two wrestlers finish as runners-up in their weight classes, Ryan Phelan and Kesston Hobbs, while Jake Shelton finished as consolation champion and Cole Rogers finished fourth.
“We had a wonderful group of junior high kids this year, some who had never wrestled,” Morris said. “As coaches, we saw improvement in them all, since day one.”
Cooper Main and Dax Sheridan both won three matches in their brackets but did not place.
Colby Clatterbaugh and Charles Curry each won two matches while Nick Massey, Carter Strate and Tucker Ercanbrack all won a match. Phil Arnold, Elijah Deming and Chris Harris also wrestled in Rangely but did not place.
Although the Meeker school system is on spring break this week, several BMS wrestlers will compete in the state-qualifying regional tournament this weekend in Grand Junction.
