RANGELY — The annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby in Rangely was held once again at the LDS Church with boys from Pack 151, 189 and 191 competing for top prizes and a bit of pride.
These Cub packs are chartered by First Baptist Church and Rangely’s two Wards of the LDS Church.
On Wednesday, Jan. 28, the evening began with dinner and the official weigh-in. Cars could not exceed 5 ounces.
There was a scramble to place some lead and even some loose change on the cars to bring them up to the maximum weight.
Nineteen boys spent the last several days cutting, sanding and painting their cars coming up with some very interesting designs for the race.
Once the bracket was set the races began. In double elimination competition it took nearly an hour to sort out the winners.
In third place was Ryan Barlow. In second place was Troy Allred racing the “Tiger” car. In first place for the second year in a row was Patrick Scoggins racing the “Yellow Jacket” for the win.
Those final races were very close and if it weren’t for the electronic eye on the finish line it would have been difficult to call the winner.
Each participant received an official BSA Pinewood Derby patch, a candy bar and an award for his specific car design.
The top three race winners took home a bucket of pride as well as a model car and a poster of a NASCAR driver. Many volunteers made the evening a success for all these boys.
