Playoff decides MVB two-man best ball

MEEKER I A total of 35 teams, divided into four flights, played in the Mountain Valley Bank two-man best ball golf tournament last weekend at the Meeker Golf Course.
“The quantity was down a little bit but the competition level was higher,” Chad Luce, who with his partner, Bill de Vergie, won the second flight, said.
A playoff was needed to determine the winners of the championship flight between defending champions Doug Choate and Joe Elliott, who shot a 6-under-par 130 after two-day event, as did, contenders Mike Paranto and Jessie Guillen. Choate and Elliott were tied for the lead after the first day with a 2-under-par 66 with Mark Barlau and Kirk Blazik of Glenwood Springs. Paranto and Guillen took six strokes off their first-day 68 to force a playoff Sunday with Choate and Elliott, whom defended their title after a three-hole playoff. Barlau and Blazik took first-place net honors with a 122 and John Cota and John Johnston finished second with a net score of 131 in the championship flight.
Luce and de Vergie were the leaders in the second flight after the first day, shooting 67 both days to win by four strokes over Don and David Ice of Rifle. Andy and Pat Coryell took first-place net honors with a 113, six shots ahead of fellow club members Erik Brown and Lex Collins.
A one-hole playoff was needed to decide the gross champions in the third flight, where Norbert Boes and Trey Morris tied with Randy Hall and Casey Knotts at 152. Boes and Morris won the playoff, giving Hall and Knotts first place with a net score of 115. Rifle’s Steve Stanek and Roger Schouten finished second with a gross score of 154, while Bill and Brandan Stewart finished second with a net score of 118 in the third flight.
Meeker golfers were also represented well in the fourth flight, as George Back and Kurt Blunt won with a gross score of 156, one shot ahead of Glenwood Springs twins Don and Paul Nadon. Dale and Kurtis Dunbar had the best net score (115), two strokes ahead of Bobby Shelton and Keith Rule.
Meeker’s Bryce Ducey, who teamed up with Rangely’s Robby Elam in the championship flight, won both closest-to-the-pin contests Sunday.
