Meeker’s Devon Pontine concluded a good year with a fourth-place finish at the Colorado Middle School State Championships. Meeker was well-represented with 12 wrestlers competing in the event.
Pontine was Meeker’s only wrestler to finish in the top four and is only the second Meeker wrestler to place in the top six of this event. Tristin Pelloni placed fifth in 2010.
Pontine won his first three matches to put himself into the semifinals. In the semifinal match Pontine lost to eventual champion Seagar Oliver of Cortez. Pontine followed with a win in the consolation semifinal but came up short in his consolation championship match.
Robby Jensen, Pelloni, Austin Purcell, T.J. Shelton and Anthony Watt all won two matches before being eliminated from the tournament.
Jake Phelan advanced to the round of 16 before losing to the tournament’s outstanding wrestler James Rothwell from Prairie View. Phelan pinned his next opponent before being eliminated by Wyatt Horn of Fowler.
Cole Purcell, Dillon Frantz, Tyler Pollock, Noah Overton and Austin Bradford also participated in the tournament but did not win a match.
This was Meeker’s last tournament for the season. The team would like to thank the parents and supporters for their contributions to another great season.
