What is a public notice?

Public notices are required by law to inform the public of government activities. Notices may include meeting agendas, proposed ordinances, tax and budget info, check registers, liquor licenses, foreclosures, summonses and bid invitations. The law requires publication of these notices in the newspaper’s county of record.

This serves several purposes. First, it makes it easy to find the information you’re looking for.

Second, it creates a permanent (non-digital and therefore unalterable) record of a government entity’s actions.

Third, it provides a third-party check on the information provided to the people.

Government transparency matters. Read your public notices!
