MEEKER — The Meeker Peewee wrestling team headed south to the annual Rifle Peewee Wrestling Tournament. Forty-three wrestlers from Kindergarten to sixth-grade traveled to the tournament as well as three members of the Barone Middle School wrestling team. The day was a complete success as the participants had a lot of fun and wrestled their hardest.
The Meeker Cowboy peewee wrestling team would like to congratulate Edward Pursley for earning the Rifle Tournament sportsmanship award. Sportsmanship awards are given to the wrestler who demonstrates good sportsmanship towards their opponent, their teammates and coaches.
Taking home champion honors were Jesus Holland-Gonzalez, James Amick, Sheridan Harvey, Casey Turner and Dillon Frantz. Just out of first place were Colt Wille and Tannen Kennedy. Third place went to Jacob Pelloni, Doak Mantle, Elijah Newman, Brett McGruder, Austin Russell, Tristin Pelloni and Aaron Cochran. Coming home with fourth place were Kesston Hobbs and Jacob Nielsen. Tevin Secrest-Pelloni, Kascia Cochran, Stephen Walsh, Trapper Merrifield, Garrett Frantz, Anna Castle, Daylon Nielson, Cody Nielsen, Logan Hughes, Hunter Garcia, Conner Pursley, Jake Rowland, Kyloe Geodert, Chance Green, Tony Collins, Austin Purcell, Qynton Larson, Austin Sanderson, Anthony Kelley, Fabian Jones, Jeffery Wagner, Edward Pursley, John Mac Sheridan and Cesar Cepeda all wrestled but did not place.
The Barone Middle School wrestlers were eighth-grader Trey Morris and seventh-graders Drew Collins and Scott Smith. Morris took second, Collins wrestled but did not place and Smith brought home a third place finish.
“All the wrestlers brought a lot of heart to the tournament and I am proud of them,” said head coach Todd Morris. He would also like to thank all the parents who helped out throughout the day. “We wouldn’t be able to give our attention to all the kids if the parents weren’t willing to chip in and help out.”
He would like to remind all the wrestlers and their parents that team and individual pictures will be taken Tuesday, April 22 at the Meeker High School gym at 5 p.m. Wrestlers need to bring their singlets and shoes and any trophies or medals they would like to have appear in their photos. Order envelopes will be passed out at practice and available the day of pictures.
The Cowboy wrestlers will travel to Rangely this weekend.
