Range Call 2014…

During the Range Call Pageant on Thursday night, Ute Chief Ouray makes a plea to his people to follow his orders and not get involved with the uprising that ended with the Meeker Massacre.

This watercolor painting of Trappers Lake captured Best of Show at the Plein Air Art Competition, which culminated Friday after two weeks of painting time. The painting was done by Susan Theile of Montrose, second place was won by Pat Sheeren Daggett of Meeker and third place went to Mary Pat Ettinger of Craig.

Long active in many facets of life around Meeker, Don and Rosemary Hilkey were chosen to be grand marshals of the 2014 Meeker Range Call Parade, held Friday in downtown Meeker.

At nearly any event of any size in Meeker, it is a good bet that you will find the Rio Blanco County Historical Society in operation, offering its famous root beer floats. Above, a good-sized crowd gathered around the RBCHS booth as Friday grew warmer and more humid.

The Honor Guard for VFW Post No. 5843 in Meeker led off the annual Range Call Parade in downtown Meeker on Friday morning, and they were followed by the Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 5843. The post has a long history with the parade and supporting veterans in eastern Rio Blanco County.

Several hundred residents and visitors ate lunch and had fun on the lawn around the Rio Blanco County Courthouse while artists taking part in the Range Call Plein Air Art Competition went about their business in the Quick Draw phase of the competition on Friday morning.
