RANGELY I Nineteen couples from the Western Slope of Colorado and eastern Utah played in the annual Couples Classic golf tournament at Cedar Ridges Golf Course during the weekend, and after two days of competition, it was the hometown couples taking the majority of the top spots.
Couples from Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Steamboat Springs, Rangely and Vernal, Utah, were divided into two flights, each playing 18-holes Saturday and the same on Sunday, using the Chapman format.
Taylor and Roger Walters of Rifle won the first flight, leading with a 69 after the first day and adding only one shot on Sunday to finish with a gross score of 139, four shots ahead of defending Cedar Ridges club champion Clark Edwards and his mom, Ellen Boudreaux.
Robby and Trilby Elam finished with the best net score (128) in the first flight, giving Caleb Temleton and Linda Gordon second.
Alvin and Glenda Halcomb led the second flight after the first day, one shot ahead of Rick and Ann Brady, but things would change after Sunday’s play.
Mark and Donna Hayden shot a 92 on the first 18 but took four shots off their score Sunday to win the second flight with a gross score of 180. The Bradys finished with a gross score of 182 but decided to take first place net honors with a handicapped score of 132.
The Halcombs finished with the second best gross score (183) and Lyle and Diane Peterson finished with the second best net score (136) in the second flight.
After four straight weekends of golf tournaments, Cedar Ridges will be open to the public for the next few weekends, until the Dotson Memorial Scramble will be played Sept. 3.
