RANGELY I The Rangely Cross Country runners were recently at the Chris Severy Invitational in Aspen, and with the weather nice and the mountains high the runners were ready for a good challenging course.

Aspen has the runners running up big hills, through trees and through high grass all making it the hardest course on the Western Slope. The runners were able to take advantage of all six different races: middle school girls, middle school boys, JV girls, JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys.
Patrick Scoggins took off fast in the varsity meet as they headed up the hill and he was in fourth as they started into the trees. As they came out Scoggins was then in third place but quickly passed the second place runner and settled into that position. He finished the course in 19:01 and in second place.
Brennan Noyes and Austin Ficken also competed in the varsity race. Noyes placed 47th with a time of 25:40 and Ficken followed him in 67th place with a time of 26:46.
Savannah Nielsen was the lead runner for the Rangely girls’ varsity. She took 21st place with a time of 26:09 followed closely by Phalon Osborn who placed 26th with a time of 26:45. Raelynn Norman ran a 28:26 and placed 45th.
The team had a lone runner in both the girls and boys JV races.
Meikka Peck placed 23rd with a time of 36:32 and Cameron Filfred placed 27th with a time of 29:14. “Both runners ran well and I am pleased how they worked through the whole race,” coach Scoggins said.
The middle school runners had their last meet of the season at Aspen. The course was a 3K which equals to about 1.8 miles. Even though they don’t hit as many hills as the high school race it is still a challenging course.
Chloe Filfred was able to run the course in 20:20 and placed 59th. The boys were able to place sixth as a team since they had five boys running.
Ben Nielsen took 13th place with a time of 13:00, followed by Colton Noel with a time of 18:47 in 68th place, Timothy Scoggins 18:53 in 70th place, Philip Noyes 22:24 in 76th place and Brent Cantrell 22:48 in 77th place.
“We will miss seeing the middle school runners on track, but look forward to seeing what they can do in the future as high school runners,” Scoggins said.
