RANGELY I The Rangely High School girls’ basketball team came away with two wins during the weekend and they also gained a great deal of confidence.
The girls began with Hotchkiss on Friday night and came out with a huge first quarter, building a 12-5 lead.
The team was led by Katelyn Brown with 14 points followed by Lindzey Thacker with seven and Katye Allred with six.
Allred also led the rebounders with 11 boards, followed by Sarah Connor with eight.
Coach Quinton Kent said, “I was pleased with the way we executed on offense in the first half. We were making shots and were more patient in our sets than we have been, and that created shots for a variety of players.”
The team had a great second quarter, taking a 25-14 lead into the locker room.
However, the second half found the Panthers a little cold offensively and their defense held off the Bulldogs in the final half.
Kent said, “We held them to under 10 points in each quarter, which is always a goal of ours, and we held their leading scorer to seven points.”
The final score was Rangely 31, Hotchkiss 28.
On Saturday, the team faced Caprock Academy. Kent said, “This was a great opportunity to get a lot of playing time for everyone.”
Rangely came out with their strong defense and found offensive rhythm, leading 18-0 after eight minutes.
The rest of the game was similar as Rangely won 48-3.
The team was led again by Katelyn Brown with 14 points, Carrie Goddard with eight and Dawn Steven and Lindzey Thacker with six each.
Katye Allred once again was atop the rebounding with eight boards.
The team will face Meeker at home this week and the girls hope to build on their great defense and variety of scoring options.
