The Rangley gridders are now sporting a winning 5-3 record, with a bye scheduled for the Panthers this week.
“They were a monster,” Rangely head coach Paul Fortunato said of the Mavericks, who draw kids to play from three different schools, Norwood, Nucla and Telluride. “Not making excuses, but it makes it tough to compete with them year to year.”
The Panthers were held to a total of 127 yards on offense, and Rangely junior Kiki Ruiz gained 98 of the those yards and scored his team’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback Kelton Elam, who is playing for injured Kaulan Brady, completed two passes, one to Jimmie Sherman and a 30-yard reception to Luis Contreras.
Contreras and Nakoma Bailey led the team with five tackles each while Sherman and Austin Blakely each were in on four.
Coach Fortunato hopes to use the bye week to get players healthy and ready to play the Plateau Valley Cowboys in Collbran on Oct. 25.
Fortunato also confirmed that Brady and Ethan Allred have been lost for the season due to their injuries.
“We are banged up, but we hope to use the bye week to try and recover,” he said.
