RANGELY I The Rangely High School boys’ basketball team lost games to Cedaredge and Hotchkiss over the weekend, but first-year coach Jeremy Cantrell is still pleased with his team’s effort.
Rangely hosted the Cedaredge Bruins on Friday and lost a close game, 52-48, but turnovers in Hotchkiss on Saturday gave the Panthers a 58-43 loss.
The Rangely-Cedaredge game stayed close the entire game, with the Bruins taking a one-point lead after the first quarter.
They then opened the lead to three at halftime. Rangely tied the game at the end of the third quarter, but they were outscored by four in the final eight minutes.
“In a lot of areas and times through the game, we executed very well,” Cantrell said. “In the end, Cedaredge made a couple more shots than we did, but I was proud of our effort.”
Mitchell Webber led the Panthers with six points and 10 rebounds. Colt Allred and Luis Contreras each scored four, Patrick Scoggins added two and Troy Allred made a free throw.
Against Hotchkiss, Cantrell said, “We turned the ball over too many times to expect to win.”
Webber again led the team with 12 points and eight rebounds, Contreras scored six and Colt Allred added five and pulled down nine rebounds. Scoggins also scored five points, Kelton Elam added a three and Troy Allred made a free throw.
“I was pleased with the way we played until the very end,” coach Cantrell said.
The Panthers will host Paonia on Friday.
