RANGELY | The Rangely Junior High School Panther football team traveled to Oak Creek on Friday, Sept. 22 to take on the Soroco Rams.
The game began with a great return by Soroco as the ball carrier eluded numerous tackles by the Panthers, reversing the field twice and reaching the end zone for the score to put the Rams up 6-0. The Rams then failed to convert the two-point conversion as the Panther defense caused havoc in the Rams’ backfield and stopped the runner.
On the ensuing kickoff eighth-grader Zane Varner was able to put the Panthers on the 30 yard line in respectable field position. The very next play saw eighth-grade running back Timothy Scoggins take a hand off up the middle for a 70-yard score. Scoggins also added the extra point to put the Panthers up 8-6 and the Panthers never relinquished the lead from there.
After a turnover on downs the Panther offense scored on one play as quarterback and Varner was able to connect the pass to eighth-grade receiver Keihlin Myers for a 60-yard score. The Panthers failed on their extra point attempt, making the score 14-6 Panthers.
The Rams then responded with a great offensive drive to tie the game 14-14 after a couple of long runs that were not touchdowns because of great hustle by Keihlin Myers.
The Panther offense responded on its next drive by Zane Varner capping off a long drive for a 6-yard score. Timothy Scoggins then added the two extra points by taking the handoff to the left and driving pass the goal line.
On the ensuing kickoff the Rams ball carrier fumbled and sixth-grader Dalton LeBleu recovered the ball and set up the Panther offense with great field position. The Panthers were able to score on the possession with another great pass from Zane Varner to Keihlin Myers for a 30-yard touchdown. The Panthers took the lead with them into halftime with a score 28-14.
The Panthers took the ball in the second half and completed another great drive with Zane Varner throwing his third touchdown pass of the game to Keihlin Myers which also gave Myers his third touchdown of the game.
The game was slowed down by the Panther offense as they were able to take over on downs on their own 32 yard line and drive to the end zone on an 8 play drive capped off by a touchdown run from Timothy Scoggins. Varner was able to add the two-point conversion with a scamper up the middle on a botched play.
The Rams attempted to make the game interesting as they took the ball over down 42-18 and scored on a drive with a great pass play. The game was ended when eighth-grade defensive back Braxton Moore picked off the attempted pass from the Rams and gave possession back to the Panthers with a final score of 42-22.
The Panthers took on the Meeker Cowboys on Saturday, Sept. 30 in Meeker at 9 a.m. Results to follow.
