RANGELY I The Rangely and Meeker middle school basketball teams provided great games over the weekend with each team winning two.
The seventh grade began the morning with a barn-burning B game. The game was tied at four before one free throw by Brittney Adams, who had three of the five points, gave them the lead and ended up being the game winner. The two baskets for Rangely were made by Korryn and K.K. Wyman.
The A game found the Cowboys 13 points closer then the last meeting and a much higher scoring game 39-19 final. Rangely was led by fast, efficient point guard Katelyn Brown who led all scorers with 24. Her sister, Kassidee Brown, added a three pointer. The Cowboys were led by Taylor Dodds with six points and Avery Watt with five points.
The Panthers’ seventh grade A team is currently at the top of the middle school league. They are undefeated and have won every game by at least 20 points. The team is coached by Jessica Fortunato and her competitive philosophy seems to be very effective. The girls play well as a team and continue to improve as the season progresses.
The Meeker seventh graders play at home Tuesday against Grand Valley and Saturday against Craig. Rangely will play Steamboat Saturday as they work toward a perfect season.
The eighth grade games were close games as well with each team taking home a win. In the B game, the teams were well matched with the Rangely lead holding around four points. Going into the fourth quarter, Katye Allred and point guard Corinne Coombs (3) showed tremendous composure extending the lead to seven as the final buzzer rang with a score of 21-14 Rangely. Madeline Amack led all scorers for Meeker with six points.
The A game was another close game as both teams came out playing tough defense. Meeker got an early lead but Rangely rallied back to tie the game at 12 before halftime. After intermission, the Cowboys continued their great defense and built confidence going into the final period.
“I was proud of their teamwork and they did a great job running the offense and making it work,” said Meeker coach Kris Casey.
Meeker won the game 27-19. Halle Ahrens led the scorers for Meeker with 12 with Reese Pertile right behind with 11.
