MEEKER — Last Saturday, Meeker High School hosted the third annual Lynn Whiteman Invitational in honor of Lynn Whiteman, a man who supported Meeker high school athletics — track and field in particular.
Seven teams participated in the meet with Olathe winning the girls team championship and Rangely taking the boys.
Many athletes were gone due to FCCLA state competitions, which devastated the Meeker girls team. Only five girls were left to compete.
Freshman Chanler May did her part by placing third in both the discus and shot put events. The 4×100 relay team of Laura Glass, Britaney Dowker, Chanler May and Devin Buckendorf placed fourth.
Team scores for the girls: Olathe 182, Grand Valley 110, Rangely 91, Soroco 86, Meeker 16, Ouray three, and Moffat County JV two.
The Meeker boys showed some competitive grit placing third in the meet. The 4×200 relay team of Logan Sanderson, Cameron Stranathan and Pat Love placed third. Freshman Cameron Stranathan also took fourth in the 1,600-meter.
Sophomore Pat love won the 800-meter with a strong race. Freshman Jared Frantz placed sixth in the 400-meter and Brock Campbell placed second in the 300 IM hurdles.
The 4×100 relay team of Joseph Galvan, Tyler Howey, Dakota Rowlett and Brock Campbell placed second and the 4×400 relay of “throwers” Marc Shultz, Ryan Wix, Jarrett Waldref and Quinn Wix placed fourth. Brock Campell ran the 3,200-meter for the first time and placed second and teammate Carlin Dagget took fifth. Tyler Howey placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Sophomore Dakota Rowlette won the high jump at 5-9 and teammate Joseph Galvan placed fifth. Rowlette added a sixth place in the long jump. Marc Shultz threw to third place in both the discus and shot put. Team scores for boys: Rangely 150, Olathe 109, Meeker 80, Grand Valley 74, Ouray 41, Soroco 38 and Moffat County JV 11.
