Rangely Rock Crawlers to host fourth annual ride, competition

RANGELY I This weekend, the trail leads to the Rangely Rock Crawling Park.
The park will be the site of the fourth annual trail ride and competition at the rock crawling park.
And event organizer Tami Williams is hoping for a good turnout of both rock crawlers and spectators.
“I’ve been getting a lot more phone calls and inquiries than I have in the past,” Williams said. “I anticipate this year will be pretty big, but you never know. We have several groups coming from Denver, Montrose and Utah. I think the economy really hurt us the last couple of years. We had 55 total (rock crawlers) last year. I’m going to be surprised if we don’t have that this year.”
As for spectators, the Rangely Rock Crawling Club is doing something different this year, in the hope of generating more public interest.
“That’s why we moved the sign-up and tech inspection to the NAPA (Rangely Auto Parts) parking lot,” Williams said. “So the local people will see all these vehicles in town and come out and watch and support the participants.”
Rangely Auto Parts is the major sponsor for the event. Local businesses also donate prizes for the participants.
“Everything they (the participants) do is free, the competition, the dinner. We don’t charge for that,” Williams said.
The Rangely Senior High baseball team will have a concession stand at the rock crawling park as a fundraiser.
There will be three classes for the rock crawling competition on Saturday: Stock, modified and unlimited. Bud Ridings and Anthony Mazzola of Meeker will be the judges.
“We’re gonna try to get started at 9 (Saturday morning) and it should last most of the day. If we don’t have everything done on Saturday, we’ll finish (the competition) on Sunday,” Williams said. “Otherwise, the people who have stuck around, we go out together and have a trail ride and go rock crawling together.”
