RANGELY I “We had a pretty good weekend,” said Paul Fortunato, coach of the Rangely 15-18 baseball team team, about his team’s performance in the Green River tournament held last weekend in Wyoming. The Rangely team won three of five games and finished third in a field of 10 teams.
“We played well the first day but had a lot of walks the second day and kind of gave the games away,” Fortunato said.
Rangely beat Douglas 12-4 to open the tournament and followed with a 7-4 victory over Steamboat Springs in the second game on the first day. Rangely suffered losses to Evanston (6-8) and Rock Springs (0-3) but placed third with a 13-6 win over Cheyenne.
“We struggled to get hits against Evanston and Rock Springs but came back and played well against Cheyenne,” Fortunato said.
Fortunato said Toby Gasper and Chas Byerly were “hot at the plate,” each hitting a home run and getting several hits for extra bases.
“Bryson Palacios caught five games in the heat and did a great job,” Fortunato said.
Rangely will host Moffat County this Saturday in a doubleheader, with the first game starting at 11 a.m.
