RANGELY I Rangely High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were busy this weekend. The varsity teams traveled to Duchesne, Utah, for games Thursday night, and the JV and freshman teams played at home in a tournament Friday and Saturday.
The home event was a great opportunity for the teams to get a lot of playing time against different teams. Jimmie Mergelman, head girls’ basketball coach for Rangely, said, “I thought the tournament went well, we were glad to have a variety of teams that we don’t see during the regular season and we look forward to doing it again next year.”
Girls’ teams competing were Vernal, Altamont, Moffat County, Central (Grand Junction) and two teams from Rangely. Vernal finished the tournament as champions followed by Altamont and Rangely 1. The boys’ teams were Moffat County, Central, two teams from Vernal and Rangely.
The Rangely 1 team beat Moffat County in a close 33-31 victory and beat Central 55-8, but came up short against Vernal 33-38. The Rangely 2 team played a close game against Altamont falling behind late 31-34. They came back to beat Central 41-18 but lost to Moffat County 34-58.
The tournament provided three games for each team in a well-run, efficient environment. This was a great way for the young kids to gain experience and maximize court time.
