RANGELY I The Rangely youth wrestling team has wrestled in two tournaments the past two weekends and will compete in Rifle on Saturday.
Rangely sent 13 wrestlers to compete in Grand Junction, finishing with nine grappler placing in the top four places of their weight classes. Eleven wrestlers traveled to Altamont, Utah, on Saturday, when eight members finished in the top four of their weight classes.
“Overall, I think the wrestlers are off to a great start this season,” head coach said Andy Lucero, who expressed gratitude for all his assistants. “These two tournaments were not league tournaments, so, basically, they are super tough. It was a great experience for them as we start our league tournaments this weekend in Rifle.”
Kobey Chism, Tyce Lucero and Breckin McElhaney each won their weight classes in Altamont on Saturday. Lucero and McElhaney each finished third in Grand Junction and Chism was fourth.
Zane Varner finished second the first week and third the second week in his bracket and Damen Maybury, who didn’t place in the first tournament,was a runner-up in Utah.
Hudson Torsell, Dontea Pearce, Corbin Lucero and Byron Mackay were all consolation champs in Grand Junction, where Jaxon Torsell finished fourth.
Marcos and Luis Quintana both finished third and Anthony Dorris was fourth in Utah. Wyatt Zufelt, Brody McElhaney and Karver Lamorieaux have all earned mat experience this season.
Lucero said he was thankful to the parents for their help and support and that he looks forward to the league tournaments.
