n Harry Thaw was found not guilty of the murder of Stanford White by reason of insanity. He was taken to the hospital for the criminal insane shortly after the jury rendered its verdict. It is the prevailing opinion that he will be liberated in a short time.
n The snow is already close to two ponies deep on the flat-tops.

n Work completed on fence at Meeker Grade School. The fence was put in to keep the children from running out into Main Street while playing games on the playgrounds.
n Sleepy Cat Resort planning Valentine Party Feb. 14.
n The heaviest snow storm to hit Meeker in a number of years left about 15 inches of snow and about an inch of precipitation.
n ‘Great Oil Shale Boom Seen for Western Colorado.’

n Meeker volunteer firemen were called away from church Sunday morning to a mattress fire at the Northern Coal apartments on 12th Street.
n Meeker High School’s Sweetheart Prom king and queen were Hank McKay and Tina Morlan. Cathy Nelson and exchange student Adrian Gonzales were their attendants.
n Michelle and Rand Hale are the proud parents of Katharine Marie, born Feb. 2 at Pioneers Hospital.
n Meeker High School wrestling team: Joe Hefton, Pat Hughes, Ray Mazzola, Charlie Lockhart, Matt Nittler, Jason Steiner, Chris Nelson, Keenan Turner, Stan Stewart, Doug Seely, Bill Anderson, Dan Ilgen and coach Bill Turner.

n It’s a little difficult, but if you concentrate a while you can resume your ill will at the place where it was interrupted by the holidays.
n Clothing, shoes and appliance were items most often purchased in towns outside the county. Reasons given were better selection and lower prices.
n Panther wrestlers: Dave Zeigler, Larry Iacovetta, Kim Kenney, John Justus, Rex Schmid, James Young, Walter Weiss, Lloyd Chism, Carl Rector, Larry Striegel, Lowell Osborne, Roy Collins, Doug Hall, Spencer Smith and Steve Cranor.
n Sheriff Russell Harp reports a quiet month of January, with no county prisoner in jail during the period.

n The seventh-grade basketball champions of northwest Colorado included Kris Hayden, Jim Lollar, Ty Neiberger, Pat Newton, Dennis Burch, Craig Wright, Todd Hogan, Mont E. Warren, Terry Richardson, Lonnie Schoenfeld, Bill Miller, Ron Reibold, coach Don Collins, Jim Haas, Brian Covington, Gary Pittma, Kim Kidder, Mike McVay, Mark Brady, Calvin Hazlewood, Gary Bland, Jim Bulwan, Gary Fullbright and coach Joel Hogan.
n The Bible Baptist youth had another tubing party Tuesday evening. This was followed with refreshments and devotionals around the campfire. Jack Elder and Mike McGee sponsored the group.

n The 911 Telephone Emergency System Board voted unanimously to proceed with the setting up of such a system.
n Peggy Rector was elected chairman of the board for the Associated Governments of Northwest Colorado.
n Club 20 held their 36th annual meeting.
n Births: Cassidy Collette was born Jan. 24 to John and Deena Cabot; Adam Michael was born Feb. 3 to Richard and Sandra Garcia; Jagun Lassit was born Feb. 4 to Jeff and Anissa Brady.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line.  The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.  See last week’s paper for a list of ways to help or contact the County Weed & Pest District at 970-878-9670 or the Conservation District office at 970-878-9838 with any questions.   • The winning teams and individuals for the 18th annual White River Community Association Buy-Fly Fishing Tournament are as follows. Individual top weight catch was Dave Metrovich and longest fish was Kevin Massey. First place team won by Rio Blanco Abstract: Erik Eckman, Adam Parrett, Dave Metrovich and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Second place team was Drake Consulting: Travis Kaiser, John Douglas, Tony Bartolomucci and Bob Brandeberry. Third place team Mr. Rogers and the Hood (accepted by Doug Rogers) Gary Rogers, Mark Beauchamp, Kyle Schutte and Rick Gunter. The white fish have been frozen and will be served at the annual White River Community Association fish fry fundraiser in June.
